Designing for Emotion – Overcoming Obstacles

In my PR Pubs class, we were asked to read any chapter of Designing for Emotion that we hadn’t read yet. I have really enjoyed this book, because I think it gives a fairly accurate look at how people think and what makes them buy certain brands over others. In this essay, I will write about an idea that I do agree with and one that I don’t agree with.

I agree that logic can only go so far. Especially, when the decision is not necessarily an important one. There are times when logic will give you multiple correct and good options, but it takes emotions to make the decision. This is an idea that I believe is very important. This is why design and packaging is so important. How many times do you go to the store and choose a brand of something, because the packaging is nice? Truthfully, I do this a lot.

I do not agree that we should be trying to gain just as much trust for people to value its benefits than to fear its costs. That just sounds like you are trying to trick people with an app that is good, but not 100% safe. I think that idea can cause people to be disappointed and with Mint, the app in which the statement was referring, which is a money app it can be kind of frightening.

All in all, I really enjoyed this chapter and I think it has a lot of good insight into how people think and behave.
