Designing for Humans

This post reflects on chapter 2 of our class text, Designing for Emotion.

What did I agree with?

“If everything yells for your viewer’s attention, nothing is heard.”

This, I think, is the hardest part of learning to be an effective designer. How bold is too bold? Am I being too understated? What is the viewer going to takeaway from this design? Aarron Walter also goes on to say that attention is a finite commodity. As the designer, it is our job to ensure that we design in a way that does not waste it.

What did I disagree with?

Aarron later talks about the misconception that design can be seen as non-essential icing on the cake. He argues that look and perception are just as important as function. While I don’t disagree with that point, I will say that there are still many designers out there whose design does not enhance the functionality of their website. I’m an avid online shopper, if a site’s layout is too difficult to figure out, I won’t shop there–regardless of how pretty it may seem.
