Final Draft Reflection

Over the past two weeks I have been designing a business card and letterhead for Bunker Hill Pharmacy. This is an organization that is very near to my heart because it was started 52 years ago by my grandfather and he has now passed it down to both of my parents. When I first learned of the assignment I was very excited, but also a little apprehensive. I had never designed anything before on my own, let alone created a logo or slogan. However, once I got the ball rolling by doing some research on Pinterest and speaking with the owner of the pharmacy, I felt much better about the assignment.

My research helped me narrow down the core values I wanted the organization to represent which were: customer satisfaction and excellent service. Bunker Hill is the only drive-thru pharmacy in town that delivers to customers all free of charge. In my letter, I really wanted to express these services and show what sets us apart from the other retail pharmacies in Altus.

As I progressed with this assignment, I found myself slowly becoming more confident with using InDesign. I am visually a very slow learner so my patience was definitely tested. It took me a while to adjust the contrast settings with the business card. Bunker Hill wanted to keep their colors navy blue and white and so in the end, I had to change the logo from black to white in order to give the card the cleanest look. I also had to play with the proximity of the letterhead and make sure it didn’t take up too much space at the top. While aligning the elements of the business card, I really had to focus on getting the logan and the slogan lined up just right. I didn’t want the viewer to lose focus of what was important and so I had to make sure those were aligned just right.

Once I saw what I could create and how professional it was starting to look I began to get really excited. It was cool to see that I could actually create something like this on my own and I couldn’t wait to show what I had done to the owners (my parents). In the end, I really would like to see the organization implement what I have created. Bunker Hill has never before had any business cards made, or even a slogan to go off of. So now, hopefully they can take these products that showcase their core values and attract more business. I really liked what I said in the letter about creating promotions to help increase business for not only Bunker Hill, but also for different businesses in Altus. I think this would be a great idea for publicity and could bring a lot to the pharmacy. I do plan on pitching this to Bunker Hill and I think they too will be very excited about the design and letterhead.

If I were asked to start over on this assignment and change anything, I would like to add some artwork to the back of the business card. Potentially I would like to have a picture of the pharmacy and the address location on the backside. That way people would know for certain which pharmacy it is when they drive by.

One thing I would tell students doing this project in the future is to have fun with this assignment. If you are not passionate about the organization you chose, I believe that will reflect in your designs. So I definitely recommend choosing one that you really care about. Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment and am pleased with the work I did.
