Final Newsletter Reflection

Our most recent assignment in PR Pubs was to create a newsletter in InDesign. We were to first create a template and then to find articles to insert into our template, rather than writing our own. I was interested to do this assignment and see how the articles I found would fit and how much change would be necessary. I didn’t find the process of making the template to be difficult . However, when it was time to insert the articles it was kind of frustrating and time consuming. I had a hard time finding short enough articles to fit into the spaces I had created.

My final layout is quite different from the draft, but I’m okay with that. One thing that frustrated me was the fact that none of the articles on Starbucks’ website had authors. Because of this, each of my bylines has the section from which the article came instead of an author. I was frustrated about that because I don’t want to get points taken off for not having an author, but I felt that I was already too far into the assignment to choose another company and start over completely.

I figured that my target public would be Starbucks employees and enthusiastic, passionate, Starbucks-loving customers. With this in mind I thought it would be important to highlight  the community and service aspect of the company, especially since April is Starbucks’ 5th Annual Month of Service. I also feel that people who enjoy Starbucks enjoy simplicity. The atmosphere when a customer enters Starbucks is peaceful, simple and homey, so I wanted to imply that feeling with my newsletter. My newsletter is below.
