Finding the Elements of Design
For “Design Blitz” Lesson 1.2, I took pictures of different objects that illustrated the concepts of design. It was really interesting to learn about all of these concepts, and then to see how they are found in certain objects that we use or see in our everyday lives.
This first photo of my agenda represents the “Balance” element of design. It is symmetrical because it is visually equal on almost all of the sides and the boxes all look almost identical. I think this design is effective when it comes to organizing and planning because it is very clean and neat. I love the way this designer created these agendas. I have used them every year!
This second photo of my pencil bag represents the “Minimalism/Use of space” element of design because the pink bag acts as a white-space, and my name can be very easily seen because it stands out. I think that this is super effective because if someone were to pick this pencil bag up, they would soon recognize who it belongs to since my name is very obviously seen.
This third image represents the “Metaphors/Symbols” element of design because of the Dove logo. This company logo is very well-known because Dove has been around a long time and their products are very popular to the public. I think that this is an effective logo because it actually it is a visual representation of their brand name and it is instantly recognizable.
This fourth photo of an Ozarka water bottle represents the “Color” element of design. Ozarka’s water bottles use many different colors such as red, blue, yellow, white and light blue. I think that their contrast in color scheme makes these water bottles easily recognizable and unique. I think that the colors are effective, however the water bottle’s design and logo are not effective because it looks too cluttered. Ozarka should choose a more simple design so the consumer does not get lost in reading their label.

This last photo of my lululemon athletica bag represents the “Typography” element of design. Lululemon uses multiple fonts that are very repetitive across all of their checkout bags. They also use different sizes. I think that these lululemon bags are effective because they are unique. Personally I like to read all of the different quotes on the bag because each bag is different!
This lesson was a lot of fun because I learned new design concepts and got creative with objects. I think that this was a great way to practice the elements of design!
