Happy to be finished!
I was asked to complete a postcard direct mailer for future OU students. I decided to focus on 16 to 18 year old female students in the state of Oklahoma who were interested in rushing their freshman year of college. They are coming from a close-knit family, and her parents have a huge say in her decisions. I was excited to get this assignment because I like working on things that can be used and applied to real life. It’s a lot better and more engaging than working on papers or doing something that doesn’t have us trying to be creative or use something that will be beneficial to us in the future. I’m still a little bummed with my final product, definitely a lot happier than I thought I would be, and I think it all came together, but it was difficult. Thinking about the postcards I got from OU in high school and comparing it to what I did isn’t as close as I’d like it to be. I had big ideas and love what I could tell someone to complete for me, but without any prior knowledge of Photoshop I was only able to do the basics. I think I reacted this way simply because it’s frustrating and annoying to have great ideas (in my opinion they were awesome, haha) and not be able to portray or show them. I don’t really feel confident with any sort of technology, but I’m not sure that will ever change unfortunately. My Instagram is about the only thing I’m decent at, and does that really count? I’m hoping to not have to use these programs in the future. Photoshop and InDesign are different in the way you can add pictures. I didn’t like how in Photoshop I couldn’t really ever figure out how to enlarge a picture to fit it to my screen the way I needed it to. That was one of my biggest problems when I was completing my mailers because the pictures wouldn’t fit in the places they were supposed to. All of the layers that needed to be created in Photoshop was also super annoying. I definitely hated Photoshop, but I wasn’t a huge fan of InDesign either.
