InDesign & Photoshop Explorer

This week our class walked through Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop, learning the basics and creative tools we could use to edit photos.  On Tuesday we worked through InDesign, watching videos through Lynda.com and testing our knowledge through experience by completing the following tasks: creating a Wireframe, importing and adjusting the fit of our graphics, creating master pages, getting color swatches, importing text documents, creating style, working with tabs, creating tables, creating PDFs and packaging our work for print. We then completed a typesetting assignment by seeing the finished product of a newsletter and making another unfinished assignment into the finished product.

On Thursday we analyzed Adobe Photoshop and then had hands-on experience by performing the following tasks: getting started with Photoshop, making selections in Photoshop, working with layer masks, masking, combining two images together, removing unwanted objects from photos changing the color of photos, converting images to black and white, cropping images nondestructively, saving our work for print.

When I was asked to complete the tasks, I was excited because I thought it was going to be simple. I had just walked through the program, of course I could complete it.. or so I thought. It was not simple to remember everything we had walked through because each task was somewhat detailed to complete. It took me remembering several times what buttons I needed to push and how to move my mouse before I could accomplish even a simple task.

Once I completed the typesetting assignment for InDesign I felt much better. Even if it initially took time it helped my brain internalize how to perform simple actions. For Photoshop, I wasn’t as pleased with myself. I felt as if some of the tasks made sense, but others were confusing to remember, and I realized it would be necessary for me to re-watch the videos. I think my reaction was mixed, because I expected to complete the tasks with ease. I watched videos that appeared simple, yet I would need to rehearse those actions in my brain before it would come so simple for me.
