It’s Reflection Time

Hello, Lovelies!

This week was the ending for lesson 3 where we were asked to research our stakeholders and design direct mailers through Photoshop. As I have said in a previous post, I greatly prefer Indesign over Photoshop; I still have that preference.

2. How did you respond to what you were asked to do? I knew working in InDesign was not going to be the only tool we used in PR Pubs, but I still hoped! I saw we were using Photoshop for lesson 3, and I was optimistic. I mean, we did go through Bootcamp, I know how to use Photoshop.

Turns out I did not remember anything except the select tool and had to reeducate myself in the ways of Photoshop. Since I had to relearn, I was frustrated the assignment was taking me so long. I had big ideas for the mailers, but my frustration caused to call it quits on some of my ideas. These are the fronts of my mailers:

It’s Reflection TimeThe direct mailer (above) is aimed towards students already enrolled for fall semester and encourages them to register for Camp Crimson.

The direct mailer (below) is aimed at alumni in creating a sense of tradition and family; hoping to encourage donations or other ways to help the university.

I prefer the second direct mailer maybe because I find it appealing to my sense of wanting to belong in a community and I hope the stakeholders share this emotion.

After relearning some tools in Photoshop, I feel more confident in what my level was before. However, if you make a mistake in Photoshop, its a done deal. There is nothing you can do about it, but start over. I prefer Indesign, considerably more than Photoshop.

Is there anything you would do differently if you were to start over? I do not like the back of my mailers. I realized I made the same mistake I did with the business cards about ideas and where to find them. So the backs are simple messages to the stakeholders then lines for the addresses, they lack everything in design. I wished I focused more on the back side of the mailers than I did.

So my advice for this lesson is:

  1. Design on paper before going to Photoshop
  2. Talk to Croom if your ideas are possible at your level
  3. Check out what your fellow classmates are doing
  4. Then go to Photoshop
  5. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE

It’s Reflection Time

Sincerely, Lauren
