Jones, Fred Jones
I am not an art major. I can’t paint, draw, sculpt, or doodle that well, but my favorite place on campus is the Fred Jones Art Museum. There are many reasons why it’s my favorite spot at OU. One of which being that it’s free. In college you learn so much, but one of the biggest lessons you learn is that free is the greatest word in the English dictionary. Besides how economical it is, I go to Fred Jones because it’s peaceful. Not very many students take advantage of the space, we are lucky enough to have the third nicest college museum in the nation and even though I claim to know nothing about art, that seems like a pretty big deal.
In a place where I’m surrounded by 20,000 students, it’s nice to spend half an hour in a place where it’s just me and a few of the local elderly. Other places around campus are meant for one of two things: learning and socializing. At the museum I have a third purpose for my college life, distraction. I believe everyone needs their own spot to hide from the chaotic environment that we love so much and just concentrate on something else for awhile. Looking at a painting of field workers picking wheat or a painting displaying an epic battle helps me realize that the midterm I didn’t do great on is not crucial to the well-being of my family or my country. Sometimes we all just need a little more prospective, but if we surround ourselves with the same environment everyday it’s hard to gain any.
I found my spot. Now go find yours!
