Kroger Kares

For my PR Publications class, we were asked to design a newsletter. Three to four pages, one pull quote, two subheads, four stories, pictures, bylines and cutline, sounds easy right? When I first heard about this assignment, I was excited since this type of publication is very applicable to “typical” PR. I was able to easily design my dummy layout and was satisfied with the turn out. But….. the satisfaction did not last long.

Kroger Kares is the newsletter I decided to design. I designed the newsletter as an internal document that will inform Kroger employees about philanthropies and charitable work the company is apart of. The newsletter therefore is pretty traditional and more so “corporate” looking I believe. I tried to match the industry I was working for to the layout and design of the newsletter.

Also, I found it difficult to input the stories I found. All of the stories were relatively text heavy so shrinking them down to fit my model was challenging. Therefore, my layout is little “busy”. What do you think?

I think at first I was happy with my dummy layout because it looked cohesive, but once I started manipulating it, I strayed from the layout (which did not benefit me). I am pleased with the final product, but think that with more time I could enhance the publication and make it more visual. I have learned a lot from this newsletter assignment and will definitely take this “new-found” knowledge to future jobs.
