Memories at OU

As the end of my four years at the University of Oklahoma comes to an end, certain memories stand out.  The best memory I have had so far is going to my language class in Copeland Hall.  I decided to learn the Native American language known as Kiowa, because it sounded interesting and different.  At the first day of class I did not know anyone and decided to sit in the back by myself.  I am not sure if sitting alone made him ponder my existence, but from that day forward I would never sit alone in class again.

When the second day of class rolled around, I decided to sit in the same seat to see if this person would notice me again.  Sure enough this male individual walks in the classroom, looks for me, and promptly walks over and introduces himself as Scotty.  He then sits and carries on to ask questions about who I am, where I am from and other generic information until class begins.  At the closing of class I say it was nice meeting you and leave.  Within a minute of leaving, I hear someone running up behind me and laugh about how we are walking in the same direction.  From this day on I would never walk alone to my car from class.

It continued on like this for about a month, going from class to car in constant conversation, before he finally asked for my phone number.  I was pleased that Scotty was taking an initiative to want to see me outside of class, so I gave him my number and went home to a weekend of waiting by my phone.  There was never any call, or message, so I decided to not get my hopes up and forget about Scotty.

When Monday came around I decided to not bring it up, the words “friend-zone” stayed in my head on repeat for the entire class and walk to the car.  Scotty noticed something was wrong and shortly figured out why my hesitations were coming throughout our conversation, because that night was the first time he ever called me.

That night it was snowing and icing, I had rowing practice in the morning and was planning on waking up a half hour earlier then planned so I could defrost my car.  Scotty ended up calling me and asking about how my night was going, and I did admit to myself that it was nice to finally receive a call from him.  I proceeded to tell him about my worries in the morning about getting my car defrosted, he instantly asked for my address and hung up the phone.  Within the hour I fell asleep and didn’t hear back from him, I woke up early and strolled outside to find my car completely snow and ice free.  The only car in the parking lot that was clean.  It was not until I went back upstairs to find a note hanging on my door, “see you in class, from, your personal car cleaner.” I could not take the smile off of my face all day.

From that day on our relationship grew and we became a couple.  Things were never easy, I was from New Jersey and he lived in Oklahoma, but we made it work.  I was never so happy to come back to Oklahoma just to be around this person.  We had two more semesters of our language class and by the last semester we were living together.  I couldn’t believe that a year could go by so quickly.  Now two years later, I have a ring on my finger and plan to walk down the aisle to marry this boy who noticed me on the first day of class.  I know his vows will have something to do with “you shall never sit alone, walk alone or scrape the ice off your car, for as long as we both shall live.”
