Newspaper Markup

For this assignment, I learned how to identify the elements of Masthead, Headlines, Deck, Subhead, Bylines, Body text, Photo cutline, Pull quote, Dividers, and Jump Line on a newspaper. I enjoyed this assignment because it has made me more aware of the structure of a newspaper article. It was interesting to notice how certain elements grabbed my attention, as well as how the division of the columns was visually appealing. I had to take two pictures of my example because in the first photo you can see the front page of the Oklahoma Gazette does not have the standard news article, but inside I could find examples of an article with most of the elements included. This assignment has helped make me aware of the types of media I see on a daily basis that include elements and structure I overlooked before, but see that there is a way to identify the type of media through the elements it includes. I enjoy the hands-on activities like this assignment because they are more engaging rather than merely informing.
