Newspaper Markup

Wow! I never realized how much formatting went into publishing a newspaper until I dissected the front page of The Oklahoma Daily’s volume on Sept. 3.

I was asked to find the following elements on the front page of a newspaper of my choice:

  • Masthead
  • Headlines
  • Deck
  • Subhead
  • Bylines
  • Body text
  • Photo cutline
  • Pull quote
  • Dividers
  • Jump Line

I was able to identify almost all the listed elements on the front page of The Oklahoma Daily, minus a subhead. Two articles had a photo with a cutline and one article incorporated a photo within the headline. The different visual formats of the three articles made finding specific elements a tad challenging, but once I found the pattern, the elements were easy to locate.

I found this assignment insightful in regards to newspaper writing. It is much more than just following a format within the body text. It was interesting to locate the different elements used within the articles. I will definitely have a new perspective on the “behind the scene” work put into publishing a newspaper when I pick up another one to read.
