Newspaper Markup

This week in my PR pubs class, we began working with Photoshop and InDesign. One very important element of design in PR publications is typesetting, often used in newsletters among other documents.

One of my tasks was to find a copy of a newspaper and label the different parts of the type. The elements I was looking for included a masthead, headline, subhead, byline, photo cutline, divider, jump line, and pull quote.

I picked up a copy of OU’s student newspaper, The Daily, and looked for the items listed above. Here is a photo of what my marked up copy looked like:

The only thing I was unable to find on the front page was a pull quote, but after turning to the second page, I easily located one.

I found this assignment fairly easy to do because of past experience and familiarity with the terms. I worked on my high school newspaper, and I learned most of these terms then. They were also reiterated in one of the intro classes I took in college.

It is important to be familiar with these terms when working on a publication such as a newspaper or newsletter so that there is not any confusion about what goes where and the purpose of the items.
