Oh Thank God, Bootcamp Is Over
Hello Lovely Viewers,
I am going to apologize in advance because this is going to be a long post – I pulled a college student move and procrastinated with posting this thing!
This week lived up to its name: BOOTCAMP.
Before starting this week’s assignment and looking at the amount of videos we had to sit with our eyes glued to a computer screen while retaining a majority of information, was a little intimidating (the videos turned out to be PhotoShop AND InDesign, and not rocket science and quantum physics). However, I knew I had to do it, so I jumped in head first.
For this week we only had three assignments: watch videos, Newspaper Markup, and the Candy Newsletter Cover. First, we started with Justin Seeley introducing us to Graphic Design – Adobe Photoshop and InDesign. And boy, does that man talk fast! In Photoshop we learned the basic tools of Photoshop such as layers, masking, effects, selecting, etc. I got carried away while “coloring” in the table and pizza, but oh well!
Seeley talked us through creating an Italian Menu which was super fun! I really enjoyed reviewing the tools, but I enjoyed learning other tricks about InDesign. My work in progress below (I did finish, but thought the beginning stages would be interesting to see):
Photoshop was the more difficult Adobe software, but, taking into account, I have had experience with InDesign for three years while writing for my high school’s newspaper. There were multiple times I wanted to through the computer out the window, but I conquered Photoshop in the end. The work we did in both Indesign and Photoshop was an average amount, and even I slowed down Seeley’s voice in the movies, I had to constantly pause the videos and watch rematch them. Indesign was the same way, but not nearly as difficult as Photoshop.
The InDesign assignment was creating a menu, but the assignment was learning the cover terminology and placement. I knew how to do this assignment quite easily. The total time it took me to complete the Newsletter Cover was 30 minutes:
The next assignment was full of nostalgia of my high school years! This was a fun and easy review I enjoyed:
In total, I spent 9 plus hours on this week’s lesson. Even though there was a lot of frustration on my part with Photoshop, I enjoyed the outcomes. I think I reacted this way because going in I expected Photoshop to be similar to InDesign and a little easier than what people have raged about it. I expected it to be easier and when my expectations were not met, I was frustrated, but I pushed through and succeeded! However, I learned new InDesign techniques from Seeley that allows me to broaden my already existing knowledge of InDesign, I’m looking forward to learning more tricks as this semester progresses!
Goodbye Lovely Viewers!
Sincerely, Lauren
