Organizational Analysis: The Houston Texans
For my PR Pubs course this summer, we were asked research, analyze, and eventually design a business card and letterhead for an organization of our choice. I chose the Houston Texans football team because I would like to work for them after graduation. For this particular post, the organization’s mission, competitors, and core values.
Their mission
As with any sports team, the goal of the Houston Texans organization is to increase ticket sales and increase merchandise sales. Pretty straightforward.
Main Competitors
Professional sports are unique in that the rely on fan bases rather than your standard consumer. For example, good advertising could sway a consumer from buying Tide detergent to purchasing All instead, but no amount of advertising could sway a fan from being a Texans fan to being a Cowboys fan or vice versa.
Having said that, I would say that the Dallas Cowboys are the Texans’ largest competitor because they are the only other professional football team in Texas.
Core Values
Although it would be easy to write off the Texans as “just a sports team,” the organization’s values extend past the gridiron. The Houston Texans Foundation was created to enhance the quality of children’s lives in the Houston area. The foundation raises money through fundraising events, administer educational/fitness programs, and partners with several non-profits. Specifically, the foundation has three major community partners: the Houston Texans YMCA, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston and the Houston Food Bank.
