Overcoming Obstacles
I chose to read the chapter on overcoming obstacles.
“Walk onto a used car lot, and your spidey-sense will tingle when the salesman approaches you with a pre-planned pitch. You can recognize a disingenuous brand trying to sell you a product that seems too good to be true. We can smell bullshit a mile away.” –Walter, p. 64
This selection in particular stood out to me, and not just for its applications to design. As someone who is preparing to enter the workforce this January , it is incredibly important to me that I work for a company/organization that I can really believe in. One of my biggest fears is that I will end up peddling BS for a company whose mission I couldn’t care less about. I truly believe that the first step to a successful (and happy) career is finding a company whose values align with my own.
As for something that I disagree with, I found Aaron’s example of Mint.com amusing. I certainly am no exception to gut decision making…except for when it comes to my bank account. I agree wholeheartedly that Mint is beautifully designed and I wish that my bank provided a similar software. And here comes the but–but, I couldn’t get over my skepticism of trusting a third party site with my bank information.
