Playing Photographer
Today I took pictures of five different types of design concepts we learned about this week in the assignment Design Blitz. Through blogging on my own I’m always snapping photos of different things when I can, but one thing that’s popular in the blogging world is a style called flat lays, which is what my examples are mostly of. Essentially a flat lay is just laying out a bunch of products and snapping a bright shot of them, but a lot of work goes into capturing the right one and they apply all aspects of the design concepts that we have learned.
Color
To emphasize color I chose to snap a picture of a pair of hot pink flats. I chose a neutral background to make sure the color really pops in the photo.
Proportion
One of the great things about flat lays is that you have to try and keep everything proportional, using the rule of thirds a lot. To showcase proportionality I chose this photo where I laid out products and tried to make them as even as possible. While the small blank space between the phone case and necklace could have something included, I felt this represented proportionality well.
Minimalism
For minimalism I chose a picture where I wanted to showcase a pair of sunglasses. With the sunglasses being dark against the whit background, and there not being much going on in the photo other than the sunglasses I felt hat this displayed minimalism well.
Rhythym
When showcasing rhythm, I felt this picture was best. The products are different shades of black, grey and brown, and I tried to have brown on one side and grey on the other, with black being the mixing piece. This sort f creates a pattern that pulls together the entire photo with one look and isn’t too scattered or overpowering.
Dominance
For dominance I chose this picture of the “outfit selfie,” to showcase. The sunglasses are what is the main focus of the picture, leaving the rest of the outfit blurred. This is a great way to highlight one specific item in your pictures and is something I use frequently.
