PR Pubs: Designing for Emotion ch. 3
People have a tendency to personify things- for example I named my car Cinderella and cried when I dented her hood because I felt bad. I felt this emotion because I made my car into a being with feelings and a soul. Of course, deep down I know that my car felt no pain and is NOT mad at me, but because I attribute human characteristics to Cinderella, I have an attachment to this otherwise inanimate metal object.
This chapter discusses how when we infiltrate humanity into our designs, and allow the viewer to attribute personality into those designs, the product is more relatable and pleasing, especially when that personality matches our own. I really enjoyed this chapter as well because I agree 100% that when we channel ourselves into design and allow the viewer to have an emotional attachment to a design, we get a much better outcome for our efforts.
