PR WRITING: Chapter 9 Response
Chapter nine follows our theme for this week and deals with social media.
Takeaway 1: Writing for the Web: It is important when writing for websites to keep everything short and concise. While I know that when I visit websites my attention span is short. However, for the copywriter it seems like that would be easy to forget so to me this section was about staying objective when writing copy for the website. It would be important to keep the reader in mind and not get too attached to your work because it might need to be changed and or altered.
Takeaway 2: Multimedia: I can say from personal experience that a website that utilizes several forms of media is more appealing than one that is simply text and picture heavy. Today with so many types of media out there even podcasts can be considered old. However, people use memes and GIF’s to explain things. Videos seem to be everlasting and are always a good use of media.
Takeaway 3: Promoting Your Online Presence: It is important that a company’s website does well and is capable of driving traffic to it. Therefore, it is completely worth making sure that it finds its way to your target audience. Using all the right tags, promoting the site on other sites or apps like Facebook and Twitter. The book also gives numerous examples of how to promote your site by arranging ads on other high traffic sites and registering your site with popular search engines. Those are all very important because if your site is failing that is possible business and promotion the company is missing out on.
This chapter didn’t really make me think about PR in a new way. Social media is a given when it comes to PR.
I think it is useful to think about writing for social media because this is something I do even now and am able to get a handle on how to write professionally using social media even now as a student.
I think that my generation is at an advantage in that we are so well versed in using social media and therefore can practice for the future and will be adequate at it when it come time to use those skills in a professional setting.
