PR Writing: Chapter 9

Three important takeaways:

  1. MAIL:

“monitor what is being said about your organization, analyze what you’ve heard, begin to interact with others on socialnetworking sites, and become a leader in the conversation.”

Essentially what this is telling the reader is that giving information and nothing else on a company website is not enough. The company must become a leader in the conversation and communicate with it’s public.

2. Keep your online writing short- shorter than print.

This is important to remember because internet users want to absorb information quickly. When online, there are so many other things to do, so holding the attention of the reader for longer than five minutes is tough. You must keep writing short and concise. This also helps because looking at a computer screen is taxing on the eyes.

3. You need to advertise your online presence.

Whether it is a blog, website or Facebook page, etc. you must make sure that people know it exists so they can visit it. You can use classic methods such as news releases, brochures, company letterhead, etc. There are inexpensive options as well, such as registering the site with popular search engines, chat forums, free links on high traffic, relevant sites, social media tags, and more.

This chapter was actually more helpful than I initially thought. I was incredibly blessed to be born into technology, having a computer since I was about 5 years old and a phone and social media since I was about 11. In my classes, I, and my peers, have been referred to as “technology natives”.

This is extremely helpful in the job hunt because we were brought up to understand computers, the internet, and how to properly use these tools. However, after reading this chapter I see that there are many strategies to use and problems that can arise that I was not aware of, and I am happy that I will be able to use this in my future profession to further aid my organization.
