PR Writing: Social Media Analysis

After scanning the Oklahoma City Thunder Facebook page, I found that they post very, very frequently, especially on game days. Sometimes, they were posting 5-10 times per game, and on off days, at least once. The content they put out is very informative, discussing player stats, game results, rankings, schedules, team events, promotions, etc. The social media team does a very good job of posting the most relevant, along with “fun fact” type, information. The information is definitely focused on them, because when you like a sports team page, you like it to hear about that team, so the Thunder does a great job of not going on tangents. With over 5.5 million likes on the page, the Thunder do not answer questions and do not share the content of others. This could be opening a can of worms, because in sports, you have to be careful with misinformation, false claims, slander, and sponsorships.

The Facebook page is strong not only because of the gargantuan following and humongous amount of activity, but also because of the Thunder brand. There are Thunder fans from Canada, to Mexico, to Australia, and all over the world. We have huge stars like Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant who bring even more publicity to the team and maintain clean reputations. The only weakness I can think of for the Facebook is that more and more people are turning from Facebook to other forms of social media, such as Twitter and Instagram. However, this is okay because the Thunder are present on all major forms of social media, including Snapchat now!
