Reflection

Hi!

This week in my PR Publications course I was asked to create a second stakeholder and a direct mailer draft for them. The images of my direct mailers are attached below:

How has your first stakeholder helped define your second stakeholder?

My first stakeholder, the high school out of state student with admission to OU, has allowed me to better define my second stakeholder because I had a basis to go off of. For the first stakeholder I was essentially starting from complete scratch, but the second one took less time because I already had a general idea and was able to use ideas from the first direct mailer and tie them in. My second stakeholder, an out of state OU alumni also a parent of a child who has been accepted to OU, was a little more fun to create. I say this because this one is becoming more of a 1980s throwback to give the stakeholder some of a nostalgic feeling when they receive the direct mailer. I had fun searching the internet for 1980s picture of OU and the one of Switzer seems to work perfectly! Hopefully this will appeal to their emotions and make them feel more convicted to encourage their student to consider OU.

Has your design changes since the last draft? What influenced the changes?

Technically my design hasn’t changed yet since the last draft but it sure is going to within the next few days! I realized I need to make major changes but have not quite gotten around to that yet. I realized that I need to include contact information on both of the direct mailers and maybe add something else to them. They seem a little plain and don’t make too much sense yet because they are so bare. The main factor in influencing the changes for me has been time. The more time I have spent looking at my drafts and looking up photos has given me more time to think about my design and the direction it is heading. I have also had time to realize elements I need to add to the drafts.

What similarities and differences have you found between Photoshop and InDesign?

Oh, sweet Photoshop… my not so dear friend.  Using photoshop this week has severely made me miss InDesign. I got so used to using InDesign and discovering the elements and then BAM Photoshop comes along and just messes me all up! I personally feel like I’m really struggling with my designs on Photoshop because it has been difficult for me to use. I think to myself, “if only I had this on InDesign right now I could do so much more!” Essentially, Photoshop and InDesign will lead you to a very similar product and they serve the same purpose: to design, create and edit photographs and platforms.  The toolbars are both located generally in the same places, with the text and selection tools on the left side, fonts and such at the top and layers on the right. I think adding a photo on Photoshop is a more difficult task and I miss the ability to right click and make the photo fill the frame perfectly with high resolution (if that option is on Photoshop and I just haven’t figured it out yet please forgive me I’m doing the best I can)! I think using Photoshop more this week to complete more drafts and my final product will allow me to appreciate the software more and become more familiar with it.
