Reflection

This week in PR Publications, we were asked to read Chapter 4 of Designing for Emotion, and construct a newsletter. As far as the chapter goes, I do agree that the element of surprise sparks an equal emotional response. This goes for designing, as well as real life experiences. If someone sees a design that is pleasantly surprising, then they are happy, and if it’s intended to be a sharp surprise, then they might feel differently. The same goes in real life in instances like surprise parties, or haunted houses where zombies jump out you.

However, I do not agree that open systems always lead to more imagination. I think imagination is in the eye of the beholder. Even in closed system designs, an imaginative person can make it what they want. And even in a closed video game, a person can alter the situations in their mind, and pretend it is something else. I agree that open systems do encourage more imagination, but they don’t stifle imagination.

This newsletter project was pretty difficult for me. Although I know how to use InDesign and Photoshop better than I did at the beginning of this class, I still do not have a visually creative mind unfortunately. If someone else designs something, then I can tell them what to do to fix it to an extent, however if I’m working on my own, then I have lots of trouble creating innovative designs from scratch. Thus, I had a very difficult time with this assignment.
