REFLECTION

  1. What were you asked to do? For lesson 5, we were asked to design a newsletter for a Fortune 500 company of our choice. Four our newsletter, we were asked to gather images and stories in order to create a three page (minimum) newsletter. In our newsletter, we had specific requirements that we had to accomplish. For this assignment we focused heavily on design, layout, color and typography. In order to create the best newsletter, we could, we were asked to use our creative skills that we learned in chapter four in “Designing for Emotion.”
  1. How did you respond to what you were asked to do? Since we were working with InDesign for this assignment, I responded with excitement! I chose Nike as my Fortune 500 company. After looking for images and stories, I was very eager to start my newsletter design. After creating my layout last week, I felt prepared to start this assignment.
  1. How did react to what you actually did? I was very happy with how my newsletter turned out! For never making a newsletter before, I was very pleased with my outcome. After reviewing my newsletter, I went back and changed a few of the images I had chosen initially and added some borders to make it more organized and/or easy on the eyes. I decided to keep my font all black and white in order to keep the basic Nike look and feel. I feel that my newsletter is unique because it is directed towards women, but does not appear girly or feminine. I wanted my newsletter to look strong and bold just like the target audience I wanted to reach would be.
  1. Now go one level deeper: Why do you think your reaction was what it was?  I was proud of my outcome because it does a good job touching on emotions as well as giving clear, useful information to the readers. My newsletter was directed towards the external target audience (Nike women). I wanted my newsletter to show the readers that they are strong and can do anything that they set their mind to. I think that my bold letters, clean font and inspiring photos can encourage women to stay active and to do their best in everything they do. Overall, I was proud of my newsletter because I thought that it did a good job encouraging women to be themselves, to stay active and to be fashionable.

Supplemental questions:

How did your target public affect your overall content and design strategy? My target public was Nike women. This external target public can be described as strong, fashionable, goal-oriented and inspiring. Having Nike women as my target audience changed my design to be bolder and attention-grabbing. I wanted to show women to chase their dreams and to be themselves with my newsletter design. I decided to keep the text and color simple and bold to grab their emotions and to encourage them to be strong and courageous. I did not want my newsletter to have a feminine feel because I did not want my target audience to feel that they were being segregated from Nike men. Overall, I believe that my design was perfect for this particular target audience and that it has the ability to grab their emotions and encourage their dreams.
