Reflection

Yippee! I finished my second week of PR Publications assignments and wow,  did I learn a lot more than I could have ever imagined. This week, I conquered one of my biggest fears. Adobe Photoshop. Ever since I can remember, there has been a looming cloud over anything resembeling photoshop. Let me set something straight, working with anything technologically related has never been a strength. So, getting through this week was similar to climbing mount everest for me.

This week we were asked to partake in a mini assignment which consisted of marking up a newspaper and finding the following terms:  Masthead, Headlines, Deck, Subhead, Bylines, Body text, Photo cutline, Pull quote, Dividers, Jump Line. Next, I watched roughly 3-4 hours of lynda.com videos (which were incredibly helpful and easy to take notes on by the way) on Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign. Finally, I got to make my own document on InDesign. Lets just say, with a lot of trial and error, I think I may have gotten something close to what the product should look like.

Personally, I was pretty pleased with my work as a first time user of InDesign. However, it seemed to reveal a side of myself that only comes out when I’m working with something that I am unsure about; My perfectionist side. And this side, my friends, isn’t very enjoyable.

I spent about an hour and a half on the InDesign Assignment simply because there was a little too much space between the deck and the byline. I realized today that this is definitely an attribute of my personality that I need to let go of when working on assignments for PR Publications.

With MUCH more practice,  I think eventually, I will grasp the concepts of Photoshop and InDesign and let go of my perfectionist tendancies. My hope by the end of the semester is that the looming cloud over adobe will be no longer!
