Reflection – Social Media Design
This week’s assignment in PR Publications was focused on designing a series of social media posts for an organization of our choice. I decided to choose Brides of Oklahoma magazine because I recently interviewed with them for a spring internship. They also utilize social media in a big way so I was able to see some of the posts they’ve used in the past as well as see what events they have and need promotion for. I decided to design my pieces to promote a fall bridal show.
The challenge for this assignment for me was that we were using a new software that we hadn’t used before in Canva. Even after completing all of the tutorials, I still wasn’t completely sure about the site. It gives you a lot of their provided design options so you don’t have as much free reign as we are used to having with the Adobe software. In the end, I think it is a quick and simple way to get things done especially something like a cover photo or Instagram post that may just be used once.
I think I reacted negatively to Canva at first because there were times where I would double click something or try to select or move an item and it wouldn’t let me, so I sensed a little frustration but in the end I got the hang of it and just realized that something simple isn’t necessarily bad. Especially on social media sites, posts can vary and have different lengths of type and information so keeping an image clear, concise, and simple on a crowded site can often be pleasing to the eye of the audience or followers.
Overall, I am pleased with my designs and think they’re delicate and nice just like the Brides of Oklahoma brand.
