For the next assignment in PR Publications, we will be creating a business card and letterhead for an organization of our choosing. Since I am the Social Media Director for The Odyssey at Oklahoma, I chose to make one for them. The Odyssey is a national online publication, with many branches at college campuses across the United States. The main objective of the company is to publish articles that appeal to college students with multiple interests and characteristics. Although the majority of the writers are affiliated with Greek students, the subjects of the articles relate to everyone.
The main competitors of The Odyssey are other online publications such as Buzz Feed and Elite Daily. Both of these are commonly shared on Facebook, just like The Odyssey. Buzz Feed articles discuss anything and everything, and is for all ages, whereas Elite Daily focuses on subjects that appeal to a younger audience, such as college students. Both of these sites are regularly visited by the same readers of The Odyssey, and Facebook users often share articles from all three sites on a regular basis.
As described on their Facebook page, “The Odyssey’s social content platform flips the traditional top-down editorial model, harnessing the ideas of Millennial thought leaders in their local communities.” This approach allows students to have a voice, and to share their stories and ideas on a national level. All content is created by Millennials themselves, allowing them to get creative and showcase their writing abilities. This is what makes The Odyssey truly unique because the young writers are not being told what to write, and therefore are creating original, interesting content that is relevant to what is going on in Millennials’ lives.
