Research

In my PR Publications course, we are designing a business card/letterhead for one of our favorite organizations. For my project, I chose to do The University of Oklahoma’s 2016 “Relay For Life” event. I chose this organization because I have served on its PR executive committee for the past two years. In this particular step of the research process, I am analyzing OU’s Relay For Life’s main mission, competitors and its core values/attitudes.

First, Relay For Life’s overall mission is to beat cancer! Relay for Life goes about this mission by gathering the community together for a night filled with food, fun and activities. This organization strives to make a difference in the world by donating money to the American Cancer Society in order to farther cancer research. In addition, the University of Oklahoma’s 2016 event strives to bring the campus together to have fun and raise cancer awareness among college students.

Since Relay For Life is such a major organization, I will be focusing on the University of Oklahoma’s 2016 event. Due to the wide variety of campus activities at OU, two of Relay’s main competitors include Soonerthon and Big Event. In addition to these events, student’s homework, busy schedules and lack of information are also seen as competitors to this organization’s event.

At the University of Oklahoma, the Relay For Life’s executive team wants to get as many students involved as possible. Since this is one of the team’s main goals, OU Relay For Life’s attitudes are described as “driven, hard-working, and passionate.” The team’s values are rooted in helping others and stopping cancer. This particular organization wants to see a world without cancer and will do anything to get one step closer to that goal. Overall, Relay For Life values families, health, teamwork, research and community.
