After creating a “competitor analysis” Pinterest board, I noticed some of the major differences between my organization, Relay For Life, and it’s major competitor, Soonerthon.
By viewing my Pinterest board, I saw that Soonerthon is a twelve-hour event that is located at the Huston Huffman center on OU’s campus. At the event, students are encouraged to stand or dance the entire time. Soonerthon is centered on kids and high energy activities. The main mission for this event is to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital and to gather OU students together to “dance for a cause.” The organization uses bright colors on it’s advertisements/flyers in order to grab their consumers attentions. Also, the organization uses the Children’s Miracle Network logo of a hot air balloon on almost all of their social media/products.
In contrast, Relay For Life is a six-hour event that is located outside on the South Oval. At this particular event, students and their teams are encouraged to have at least one person walking at all times. Relay For Life has different events throughout the night to keep the students engaged and involved. Although it is fun, I found that Relay For Life’s event/organization has a more serious tone and attitude. The main mission for this organization is to raise money for the American Cancer Society and to increase cancer awareness among OU students. Relay For Life uses more simple, bold colors on their advertisements/flyers. I found that the main color scheme they use tends to be dark blue and purple. Also, Relay For Life uses the cancer ribbon symbol as well as the American Cancer Society logo on almost all of thier products/websites.
I think that Relay For Life’s image should continue to be simple yet bold. In order to stand out from Soonerthon, I think that my campaign should use as much purple as possible. I think using the color purple as much as possible would help students identify the color with the event. In addition, I want my campaign to emphasize the purpose of Relay For Life. Since cancer has such a major effect on our society today, spreading cancer information/facts to students could make them want to get more involved with the event. Last, I want my organization’s messages to be more serious/attention-grabbing than it’s competitors. Overall, I want my campaign to give students hope that we can one day put an end to cancer and that everyone can help make a difference!
