Research

For my PR Publications course we were asked to research a organization that we aspire to be a part of, one that we would like to brand ourselves with. Since I enjoy learning and education, I chose the University of Oklahoma.

Naturally, if you want to work for a specific company, you probably identify with its mission. According to the University of Oklahoma, this is their mission.

The mission of the University of Oklahoma is to provide the best possible educational experience for our students through excellence in teaching, research and creative activity, and service to the state and society.

Academic institutions are interesting because they do not really sell anything tangible, unless you believe the worth of your money is a piece of paper called a degree. I believe the University of Oklahoma sells the opportunity for learning and furthering ones education and endeavors.

The University has multiple competitors, it just depends on what you are looking into. When it comes to sports, especially football, the University of Texas or even Oklahoma State could be their competitor. But when it comes to education, the University of Central Oklahoma excels and OU competes with them in that program. In addition, the University of Oklahoma competes in status. The University of Oklahoma calls itself the most private-public school of the midwest. With this though, OU has initiates like upper-classman dorms and Evans Hall to give it that private school feel when they compete against the University of Tulsa.

The University of Oklahoma is a research institution so its research is a integral part of its academics. Some of the research values it holds for the rest of campus are:

  • They are all about people
  • All university disciplines matter
  • Integrity and mutual respect define them
  • Open debate leads to excellence
  • They are a community of collaborators
  • Broad participation is foundational
  • Research and education are intertwined

All of these pieces make up the university of Oklahoma, its successes, participants and achievements.
