Research

I am enrolled in a Public Relations Publications course this semester. My classmates and I are going to be designing business cards and letterheads for various organizations of our choice.   I chose to use the University of Oklahoma’s Stompdown event as my organization. I chose Stompdown because I am a member of the executive committee and I want to make the 2015 show the best show yet. Hopefully my in class work will help this organization outside of the classroom while planning for the big event of Stompdown. For this particular assignment, I am analyzing the state of the current organization’s resources, processes, and values overall.

I aim to answer three main questions:

  1. What is your organization’s mission–the service or product it sells?
  2. Who are its main competitors?
  3. What are your organization’s most dominant attitudes and core values?

  1. Stompdown is an annual step show competition hosted by the Black Student Association and National Pan-Hellenic Council at The University of Oklahoma. The mission of Stompdown Exec is to host an event that showcases the talented members of the Divine Nine, the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is a collaborative organization of nine historically African American, international Greek lettered fraternities and sororities, and other participants through the art step-dancing. Step-dancing, or stepping, is a form of percussive dance in which the participant’s entire body is used as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word, and hand claps. Stompdown aims to not only invite performers, but also active members, alumni, and spectators to enjoy the hard work and efforts of these young men and women. The show aims to attract judges, performers, and spectators from all over the United States to participate in one way or another by attending the show. Tickets are $15 for students and $20 for non-students.
  2. Stompdowm does not necessarily have “competitors.” Our biggest competition depends on the stage of planning. When it comes to event nights, benefit nights, and promotions, our biggest competitors are other CAC and Student Life organizations. They target our same publics, demographics, and area. Competitors pertaining to Stompdown’s actual event is an entirely different thing. Last year’s show is our biggest competition. We want to promote more, attract more teams from different states, have more people attend the show, and have an overall more enjoyable show. Also, we compete with other Step shows across the country to see who attracts a better crowd and is over all more successful.
  3. Stompdown’s most dominant attitudes and core values center around the participants and the audience. We want to showcase the talented, diverse members of the Divine Nine and bring together the community to support the participants, as well as enjoy an amazing, entertaining show. We pride ourselves on originality, diversity, and creativity.
