Social Media Design Sprint
This week in my PR Publications class we had the task of designing FOUR pieces of social media promotion on behalf of an organization of our choice. There was one catch, we only had one week. Normally, our projects are so spaced out in this class. (And I personally do quite a bit to my initial designs in the revisions process.) However, this time we had to have our FINAL product on four different pieces done in just a week.
I chose the OU Athletic Marketing Department, an organization I held an internship with previously. I decided to promote the OU Women Gymnastics team going to the NCAA Championships in April since we are the front-runner for the competition.
My main goals behind my four designs for the gymnastics team was to promote the Championships and that they had won last year. One thing that made me mad when I was looking at websites directed towards the SEC viewers and teams, some only stated that Florida was last year’s champion. Instead of Florida and Oklahoma being co-champions for the National Title. I incorporated the slogan “One More Title” in a couple of my designs because I wanted it to show that WE GOT A TITLE LAST YEAR TOO IT WASN’T JUST FLORIDA.
Instagram post – This would be my post on Instagram that would most likely go with #ThrowbackThursday. I picked an amazing image of a gymnast doing a flip to stand out against other photos on the Instagram feed. The text has a reminder about the Championships approaching with the date. Also, there’s another reminder of striving for gold written in gold. The caption would provide information on how to get tickets and what station viewers can watch the event!
Facebook Post – Again this post has my slogan of “One More Title”, but the image displays the hard work and dedication put into the ‘quest’ for one. This also has the date and the caption with the post would have ticket and time information for those who would like to watch it.
Facebook Cover – There isn’t much information that can put on a Facebook cover image. But I tried to put the streaming information and the slogan. I picked a picture that showed the gymnasts practice as a team because this would most likely be on their team Facebook page.
Twitter Cover – Since Twitter cover photos are squished to be very tiny, I decided to choose an image that showcases the team and trophies! Maybe if they win big in April, this photo could be updated with a different kind of trophy in it. ![]()
- What are some of the affordances that an app like Canva brings? What are its limitations?
- Canva gives a designer so many possibilities and options for their product, and I think the only limitation of this is that the designer can be stalled by only using Canva layouts and texts because it may prohibit the brainstorming of something else new and inventive.
- Did your design process and design thinking change based on the technology?
- A little. I had absolutely no vision of what I wanted my design to look like before I got on Canva. I just played around with all the different texts and layouts until I found something I liked.
