Social Media Design Sprint Reflection

In class this week we were asked to do a social media design sprint. We were to choose a company and create a Facebook cover photo, Facebook post, Instagram post and Twitter cover photo for them. I think that I responded to the assignment well. I was excited to create these. However, it took me a long time to decide which business I wanted to do and what I wanted to do for them. I actually created several drafts of different ideas for the business on which I decided to focus before making a final decision.

I chose to design the social media posts for The Earth Cafe and Deli in Norman. I started off with one design and ended up switching to something else. My finished product announces that Earth Day is April 22, which means it’s a great day to celebrate at The Earth. It also includes an inspirational quote.

When I started using Canva I was a little frustrated because I didn’t think it was very flexible or that there were many design options. I think I felt this way because we have been spending so much time in Photoshop and InDesign, which are very flexible. However, once I figured out how to really use Canva I really liked it. I want to start using for my own personal use now!

I liked Canva because it helped to spark ideas rather than just having a blank canvas from which to start. It helped to inspire my final designs. There were some limitations on Canva as well. There is not as much you can do with the text and layout as there is with InDesign or Photoshop. There also weren’t as many photo editing features as there are in Photoshop.

I don’t think my design process changed all that much based on the technology. I think it may have been somewhat advantageous to me because it gave me some ideas I hadn’t thought of before.

Below are the design pieces I created.
