Social Media Sprint
This week for my PR publications class, we were asked to design social media posts for an organization of our choice. I chose to design for Sigma Phi Lambda, which is a Christian sorority here on campus that I am involved with. We were asked to design a Facebook and Twitter cover photo, as well as a Facebook and Instagram post.
First of all, for the Facebook and Twitter covers, I tried to keep the design pretty simple. I chose two colors that I really liked and that I thought complemented each other well. I wanted to keep the designs pretty similar as well, so I just inverted the colors. This way, it wasn’t the exact same picture but it was still pretty similar.
The Facebook cover photo would be used for our group Facebook page (because we don’t currently have a Facebook page which can be liked) and the Twitter cover photo would obviously be used for our Twitter page.
For the Instagram and Facebook posts, I just basically made posts that included just the name of the sorority with the same color palette and a similar design feel. I would imagine these being used for recruitment posts. For example, a sample caption might be like an invitation giving the location and time of recruitment events.

In addition to these, I also just decided to play around with the software and I designed a post that could be used for our date party that we are having this weekend. I think it would work well on Instagram or Facebook as a way to put all the details of the event in one place.
I just didn’t include this in my designs because it didn’t really go with the overall look and flow of my other posts, but I really liked it and enjoyed making it.
Since I was designing for a sorority, I had the freedom to make things look as girly as I wanted, which was something I appreciated. I approached this project with the mindset of just designing things that I really liked because I figured that things I thought were cute were likely things that other girls in the sorority would also like.
I really really enjoyed this lesson. If there’s one thing I feel like I really understand, it’s social media since it’s something I take part in pretty much every day across one platform or another. I had heard of Canva but had never really used it before, but now I feel like I will use it all the time. It was hard for me to stay focused on just creating stuff for the organization I chose because I was thinking of so many other things that I could design something for. I loved that it was very simple and easy to use. For me, I know how I want stuff to look it’s just sometimes a little harder to get to the end result and with this software, I felt like everything turned out exactly how I wanted it. I’m looking forward to using it a lot in the future.
