successes and failures of typesetting
For this assignment, I had to utilize my “newly discovered” Indesign skills and mimic the textual design of a provided newsletter. This simple yet complicated task proved to be more challenging than expected.
I learned Indesign is the best tool to make newsletters, brochures, covers etc. In the past, I have made my own brochures or newsletters by drawing text boxes and shapes in Word documents. So, this assignment taught me how to utilize the applications Indesign offers. The multitude of template possibilities and design tools can really create any professional publication.
Successes
1. I replicated text boxes for the written material that were the same size and dimensions from the original publication.
2. I {finally} learned how to properly reverse my work or “undo” mistakes… Control Z!
3. Placed headlines, bylines, subheads, body text and quotes in the proper layout with the correct font.
Failures (room for improvement)
1. May be better at replicating material than generating my own?
2. I had trouble moving material once I had already placed it.
3. I realized the importance of spacing and layout.
I really enjoyed this assignment. I got to play around with Indesign and learn about the tools it offers. Now, I need to learn how to make an “original” newsletter!
