Summary of Learning
This semester in Public Relations Publications we explored the elements of design through different programs and projects. We began the semester by learning more about typography. I found this very interesting because I really enjoy using different fonts in a single project and this lesson helped my learn how to do this correctly. We then completed a project where we found the elements of design in our surroundings. I used my room and I was surprised at how easy it was so find so many different design elements in one space.
We then jumped into adobe suite. I have experience using these programs from past classes but it was frustrating at first because I wasn’t as familiar with the programs as I thought I was.
The first project was designing a business card and a letterhead for a company of our choice. For this project, we conducted more research than we did for any other project. At first I didn’t understand the purpose to all the research but in the long run it really helped and I ended up conducting similar research for each project. We then went on to create a direct mailer, social media posts, and a newsletter.
Overall, I throughly enjoyed this class because I learned so much that I feel I will be able to use in my future. Throughout this course I learned by doing which is how I learn best. Especially when it comes to design and art, students will only learn when they design and redesign different projects until they perfect their design. After this class, I feel I am ready to be given future projects and be able to know which program to use to create the best design for my client. I am more comfortable with the programs I already knew how to use and even learned about some new programs I can use in the future.
For my summary of learning project I used the software Canva to create an infographic. I decided to use Canva because I had never used it before this class and I wanted to gain more experience with it. My infographic is a quick guide to the elements of design because I felt that this was something we discussed within every project in this class. I included a guide to which Adobe program to use and the uses of each, the elements and principles of design, and the emotions linked to each color. I also made my infographic long and thin. This is a design style I have seen on Pinterest and I wanted to mimic it. I believe that the size of this design makes it easier to follow.
