The Beginning

Being introspective is always difficult and creating a professional portrait may be as introspective as I can get at the moment.

Who am I?

My name is Teresa Flores Guillen and I am a Public Relations student at the University of Oklahoma finishing my third year with minors in Spanish and enterprise studies.

I am a full time student with a part time job and although I like to believe my perfect day involves  hanging at home on a Netflix binge, the truth is actually far from that.

I like to stay busy. Free days drag on forever and staying at home a full week makes me go through existential crises.

Working retail I don’t always have the most positive attitude, but I have definitely learned to have a tough skin. You really need one if your job consists of smiling at customers as they yell at you and figuring out how much free stuff it will take for the yelling to stop. I’m grateful for what I’ve learned, however, and I believe every bad day at work pushes me even more to create a life beyond college.

I also like to be involved on campus and pretend like I know what I’m doing as a PR practitioner in training. I love being in programming committees and sending no less than 15 emails before noon is like a good cup of coffee to me.

Here’s what I believe:

Wherever you are

Be grateful

Be humble

Be happy

It took me a while to get here but once I took the time to see how much I actually have learned and accomplished, these short words became my mantra.

I’m motivated by doers. I like to see what others like me have accomplished and realize that if it can be done then I can do it. Or at least try.

I’m guided by my passion for learning and my desire to make myself as well as my family proud. Family is, in my mind, the most valuable constant I can hope to keep in my life.

Going into public relations publication I can see that design is a way to express what I’m not always able to put in words. As much as I love written communication, visual design can go into subtleties that bring out emotions on a deeper level. I want to learn to create that.

On a more personal level, I’ve always been the kind of person who asks why? I want to learn what moves people and why; I want to see the process and how something so visually striking comes to be.

So this is the beginning of me trying to figure that out.
