The great race

The theme for today is a race for three particular reasons:

  1. Before I wrote this post, I was plowed over by a biker racing to class.
  2. I feel like this week I’ve been in a race against my responsibilities. “who will get to the deadline first!!” “will Jess survive!!” nobody knows.
  3. I have just finished playing some typing games for this publications course that race against the clock and one’s own abilities, and let me tell you, I’ve learned some things.

Now, a quick preface: I am a HIGHLY competitive person. So when this blog prompt was presented to us, needless to say I was intrigued.

There were five games to play: shoot the serif, type connection, poster letters, type war and kern type.

I will write the remainder of this post as not only a review, but a commentary.  Let us begin:

Shoot the Serif: Interesting premise, easy game, I liked it just fine. Gets kind of boring if you continually shoot the wrong thing, especially frustrating if you see the last one you need to shoot as the timer runs down. 6/10, would not play again.

Type Connection: Really basic, not much to it. Probably my least favorite of the five, difficult for me to get into besides the competitive aspects. 4/10.

Poster Letters: Intriguing, entertaining and fun. Really cool to realize that we’ve been so brainwashed by marketers that we can identify a movie poster letter and identify their marketing and branding for that movie. Also, gives aspirations as to who I want to be when I grow up (one of these brainwashers). 8/10.

TYPE. WAR: Listen here people: this game will ignite the competitor within. Hear this: I got to level 10 in 20 minutes. I timed myself. I saw an opportunity and I ran after it. The difference between a Garamond and a Baskerville? Just look at the feet and the shape of the curves. A Veranda and a Helvetica? Width of the letter. If I had to self-identify as a font I would go with the thickness of an Optima with the shape and look of a Didot. 11/10, will play everydayThe great race

Kern Type: Highly enjoyable and easy to figure out. I got a 100% on my third attempt. 9/10
