The Importance of Typography
“Do you like learning about typography?”
“YES”
Just by uppercasing the word ‘YES’ you immediately feel a sense of impact or a burst of emotion. Letters, fonts and capitalization are all apart of typography. Typography allows for words or letters to take on a “persona” and conveys emotion to the consumer.
For this PR Publications assignment, we were given the option of selecting three different typography games. This exercise enhanced my understanding about the importance of typography and also made me realize that identifying certain fonts is not always easy!
The three games I played were:
1. Shoot The Serif
This game was my personal favorite! It tested my knowledge on identifying serif fonts alongside my hand eye coordination…my competitive nature got me hooked fast. I made it to senior level and gave myself a big pat on the back.
2. Poster Letters
I found this game particularly challenging. Various letters from movie titles were displayed, and I had to indicate which movie each letter belonged to. I got stumped on majority but nailed “Bugs Life”!
3. Kern Type
In kern type I had to move letters around to ensure that there were equal distances between the letters. This activity or shall I say art is called kerning. I really enjoyed configuring the spacing and then comparing my layout to the experts.
