To PR or Not to PR, That Was the Question
By Christy Montenegro
Through my high school years and the start of my college education, I was set on International Business. It was the career I wanted and dreamed of one day becoming a big shot CEO of a company world-wide. Little did I know that would quickly change after my first day of Accounting I.

I mediocridly managed my way through College Algebra and moved to Accounting 1 in the Spring of 2008. I immediately felt like I didn’t belong there and dropped the class without further consideration. I decided to tackle my math fear from a different angle so I moved to Calculus 1 for Business, and to little surprise, I failed miserably. My hopes for a college education were slowly slimming and I wasn’t sure where I should go from there.
I can’t recall exactly how I came across Public Relations, but I do remember my hopes for a Bachelor’s Degree quickly sky rocketed. It was the only career that caught my attention and interested me following my acquittal from International Business. I jumped on the school focused bandwagon and was determined to follow through.
Well, that didn’t last long.
Life got in the way and my hopes were once again stumbling down a steep slope. I lost motivation and the determination I had originally kicked off with. I wasn’t sure what I was doing in life but one thing was for certain, I wanted to travel the world.
For the following two and a half years, I flew around the world like a careless little bird. I finally found something I was utterly passionate about and nothing was holding me back from going on new adventures. I felt accomplished and empowered for reaching a goal I’d set my mind on.
It was smooth flying until I came across moderate turbulence and realized what I least expected.
I wanted to go back to school.
After much deliberation, I made the decision to move back home and start back up where I left off. I resumed my education at Oklahoma City Community College and made it my next goal to attain my college degree.
At this point I knew I wanted a career in Public Relations but there was still a small fire of uncertainty that needed to be put out. I enrolled in Principles of Public Relations and deemed that class the deciding factor, which thankfully, put the cherry on top of the sundae. I was finally 100 percent sure this was the right path for my future and once again, nothing was going to hold me back from accomplishing just that.
I am currently a junior at The University of Oklahoma and will graduate with a BA in Public Relations in May 2017.
