Typography

Our second assignment over the week was to play online typography games, which helped train my brain to internalize different fonts in a creative way.

The first game I played was “type connection”, which meant I would choose a font and find it’s love interest after choosing what type of personality it had. For example, the above image is a screen shot I took of compatibility partners ITC Century and LinoLetter. ITC Century was the font I chose, and I had to find it’s partner based off of the personality trait “seek the similar”.  Both fonts had slender forms and large counters, as well as a few other similarities. They weren’t exactly alike, but both fonts fell under the same overall type. I made the comparison to people. You can meet two people who have very extroverted personalities. One person may be the type who’s constantly making people laugh and being the center of attention.  The other person may be extroverted through kindness. They often engage in conversation individually with people around them, though they are not the center of attention in a large crowd. Both individuals thrive in the midst of others, so they have a similar trait, but the way they carry that trait may be different.

The second game I played (maybe too many times) was “shoot the serif”. I loved this game because I have a competitive personality so I was determined to continue beating my score. It also amazed me how quickly I could determine the serif font. My brain could process the font within minutes of playing the game, until I was at the senior level merely trying to beat my previous score. This was definitely my favorite game.

Lastly, I played “poster letters”, which was definitely the most difficult. However, after I realized I hadn’t seen 75% of the movies they included, I felt better about myself. It was definitely interesting to realize that even if I hadn’t seen some of the movies, I knew I had seen the typography somewhere. It’s amazing to realize how much your brain picks up within seconds of glancing at something.
