Typography
So I took the whole game thing a little to seriously and ended up playing all five typography games for a total of probably two hours… oops! But I now know how distinguish a serif from a sans serif and I could probably spot the font “Didot” from a mile away, thanks to Type War.
I started off with Shoot the Serif and quickly learned I should probably not stare at my computer screen that intensely for awhile… I enjoyed this game but quickly decided to test my Movie Poster knowledge with Poster Letters which was by far the hardest game out of them all! I lasted about 3 guesses until I clicked through each letter to view the whole poster.
I enjoyed the Type Connection game and found a font match on my second try (My matchmaking skills are unparalleled)! This game was definitely very informative and had a lot of background to each featured font.
Next I moved onto Type War. This is where I spent a majority of my time because once I got to level 10 it seemed like it was never ending. I took the advice of cheating and spent most of the time changing fonts on my Word document and comparing them to what I saw on the screen. It absolutely helped me and gave me a much better idea of what I was doing. After awhile, I decided to enter my email address and login so it would save my score and it then proceeded to tell me that I had reached level 15! (WHAT?!) My longest streak was 117 of which I am very proud.
The last game was a little easier and I really enjoyed it. After getting 3 perfect scores, I ended with a score of 89/100.
Overall, I definitely learned a lot about typography and fonts through the Lynda.com videos and these games. I felt like I had a good knowledge before, but I learned much more than I ever thought there was to know about typography just through these class materials.
