Okay, let me start off by saying that this might be one of my all time favorite assignments. Its not everyday that your assignment involves playing games! That being said, I decided to play ALL OF THEM! From the first one I played (Poster Letters), I learned that my love of movies failed me! I completed, in total, 8 of them before I admitted defeat. While this was a sad turn of events I can confidently say I redeemed myself in the rest of the games. I think my favorite was Kern Type. I never thought it would be hard to make sure each letter was lined and spaced evenly, but boy was I wrong. On my first attempt at the game I got a 20% on the first level, however my competitiveness kicked in and I managed a 70% on the next. By the end of the game I had managed FOUR perfect scores. I count this as a success for a first timer like me. The next game I played was Shoot the Serif, if you want a game that is going to make you scream at the computer while you quickly find the Serif letters out of the Sans-serif, then this is the game for you! I will not lie, this one took me a few rounds to get right, but after screaming and watching the seconds tick down I managed a decent score.
This game showed me the differences (even the slight ones) that you can find between Serif and Sans-serif. The last one I played that I loved was Type Connection, while this game was more matching types it created a love story and showed you how to mix them. I being the overachiever that I am (:-P) got a perfect match on the first try, now I don’t know how much of that was shear luck, but I do know that it taught me that different types can interact well together to form a more cohesive design.
