Typography

Typography is an important factor in publication design because typography is the technique of arranging words and fonts in a way that promotes clarity and accessibility. This week in PR Pubs we played some typography computer games to increase our knowledge and skill level.

The first typography game I played was Shoot the Serif. In this game you are given a certain amount of time to pick out the serif fonts and “shoot” them in order to win. This game helps with being able to identify serif and san serif fonts.

This game was pretty fun and easy for me because I already knew the difference between serif and san serif fonts. I learned the importance of knowing the difference in one of my previous PR courses. My high score in this game was 98.

The next game I played was TypeConnection. This game teaches you how to mix fonts together so they look pleasing and offer a good balance. The game focuses on creating a story using the fonts you choose. The object of them game is to choose two fonts that work well together and create a “good couple”. I am not very good at this game and choose the two wrong fonts to go with my main font choice. With only one font left to choose from, I finally found the right partner for my main character font.

My main font was Univers, a sans serif font that is easy to read from afar and good for long text. Its partner font was Linotype Centennial, a serif font that tries to compete with Times New Romans and is commonly used in Newspapers and Magazines.

The last game I played was Type War. In this game they show you one letter of the alphabet in a certain font and give you two font choices to choose from. You have to correctly guess the font name in order to advance. This game was pretty fun and I made it to level 5 without cheating. You really had to pay attention to the details and similarities in each of the fonts. I began to pick up on the characteristics of certain fonts, which helped me to choose the right one.
