In my experience to learn type, I played a few valuable games to help me learn all of the different aspects of type. There are so many different styles and themes that I didn’t really know about. It’s wild that we are around these fonts every day, but when it comes to recognizing them, it’s as if we have never seen them before. I’ll start by explaining the games and what I learned from each of them.

The first game I played was shoot the serif. This game consists of finding the serif fonts in a group of letters. You have a certain time limit and you try to get as many as you can to get the highest score. This game was pretty easy and you start to get better and better the more times you play.

The next game I played was type war. This point of this game is to guess between two different fonts about what the letter is. This game starts off kind of hard if you’re not super familiar with the fonts, but it gets easier because it gets repetitive. I thought it was valuable to learn.

The last game I played was type connection. This game wasn’t entirely fun, just more educational. It basically just tells you what fonts compliment each other the best, as if they were dating. It could be useful to know so you can decide which fonts to use together.

All of those little games are useful if you are new to learning font. I’m glad I was able to learn and get better and better as I went along!
