Typography Games
I was recently given the opportunity to play a few games in class to help me learn about font designs and how they can work with other fonts. These games included Shoot the Serif, Type Connection and Type War.I definitely have some mixed feelings about these games. Mostly just because I’m really competitive and wasn’t particularly good at any of them.
The first game I played was Shoot the Serif. This game started off super easy but got extremely frustrating as time went on. Not only are you trying to beat the clock but you also have to differentiate between the types of font. Not as easy as you’d think. By the 4th round there’s so many squiggles and loops that you really can’t tell unless you’re use to seeing them. Personally, I only use Times New Roman so I had no idea what was going on.
The next game I played was Type Connection. I thought this game was really cute and super helpful. It was sort of a play on the Love Connection. Overall, I thought it was fun and a good way to see how different fonts relate to each other. When your fonts weren’t a match it told you why and how to fix it then gave you the chance to rematch the fonts to choose two that go well together. I really appreciated the in depth explanations of everything.
Lastly, I played Type War. This game may be the most time consuming and frustrating of the 3 that I played. The whole thing was basically just a guessing game unless you cheated. But cheating took so much time. And I was so worried about getting the right answer that I wasn’t even focused to the recognition aspect of the game. I made it to level 5 and probably could have gone all the way to level 10 but I just didn’t have the patience.
